Today we are going to feats of clay! We are going to Westland High School to work and play with clay! Eight of us are going, it is me, Avery, Haley, Alyssa, Jessica, Brandi, Emma, and Caitlin! It is about to be so much fun and a big mess! We are probably going to get a really low placing but who cares. we are gonna have fun!

Ceramic Owl

The process of making this owl was very simple. First I threw a cylinder and cut it all the way down to the bottom, after that I pinched the top of the cylinder so I could form the ears. To form the eyes I took a pen tool and moved it around in circles until the eyes looked like actual eyes. I carved the feathers and "wings" on the owl by using a ribbon tool. I had to put a hat on the owl because the top of its head looked a little dented. Thank gosh the hat made its head look better! To finish it off I used The glaze Tuxedo Black for the top hat, Grey Hare for the eyes/inside and Orkid for the outside.

Vase #1

Vase #1We were supposed to make vases that were 6 inches or taller. This vase is about 4 inches, honestly it is difficult to pull up the clay especially since I've only been throwing on a wheel for a couple of months. The glaze I used on the vase was mirror blue, it is a very pretty deep dark blue that is really shiny. I thought it would match the vase perfectly. The quality of this picture isn't that great so the glaze looks speckled but it is not.

Finished Place Setting

                                                                  Finished place setting.
I just finished this place setting last week. It took me about two weeks to completely finish it. Glazing and blending took the longest time and it was kind of difficult, trying to get the right colors on all four pieces. Each piece gradually got better every time I glazed one. I am not really happy about this project, I wish I would have chosen an easier piece of artwork to glaze onto my pieces!

Place Setting.

                                                               A work in progress!
                                           - This is a place setting that I started about 2 weeks ago. We had to pick an artist and imitate a piece of their work on our cups, bowls, and plates. The artist I chose was Georgia O'keefe. She was a western artist that mostly painted barns, sunsets and bones. I choose to paint a sunset on my plate which is probably the hardest painting job I have ever had to do. Making everything blend today was just really sucky and hard to do. I did not like it at all. my favorite piece from my place setting would have to be my bowl! I love the shape of it and how the colors turned out in it!

- For me, the greatest challenge in Ceramics II is learning how to move with the clay; making it taller. That would be why this bowl is so short. For the life of me, this piece of clay was being so stubborn and I could not pull it up. But, throwing on the wheel takes a lot of practice and I have already improved greatly.

My Favoite Project

1. What was your favorite project and why?
-This project was a free form. We rolled out of a piece of clay and we stuck it on the top/bottom of a cup and you formed the ends to how you wanted them to look. I like this project so much becuase I love the way it turned out. It looks like a really cool cross and I know it is a really simple project but I love it so much! I just wanted to make a million more of these!
